Yiddish Word of the Week

Futz (verb): to mess around, to screw around. Commonly used when someone asked what I did on a Sunday morning. As in, "Not much. I futzed around on the computer, then cleaned the apartment."

That's funny! I've used this word for years and had no idea it was Jewish! Learn something new every day!

A cute word, and a funny one, but alas, not really Yiddish. It might be inspired by Yiddish, though, in that it sounds sort of Yiddishy. There are a couple other words like that, like "shmo." But this word clearly came into the word as a dodge for a certain English word that begins similarly...

I went and looked up the word, as there seems to be some disagreement as to whether it is Yiddish or not, and found this at http://www.yiddishdictionaryonline.com

futz, to fiddle around, to putter around (American Jewish, possibly derivated from Yiddish 'arumfartsen') פֿוץ
