Some days...

Some days you just need a call from your best friends. They aren't the happiest days, and yet they are some of the best. They make you laugh, they make you think, and most of all they don't let you take yourself too seriously.
We all need someone like this. We need the friend who has your back unconditionally. Who knows all your secrets. Who would sit next to you in jail and say, "Dang, that was fun!" Who tells you when the dress looks stupid, or when the hair-do is fabulous.

In my latest manuscript, my main character has two of those friends. One is a co-worker, the other has been her friend for years. Neither is afraid to tell it to her like it is, and call her on all her, um, stuff.

NY C is one of mine, and I can't wait to see her in the next few months. Who's yours?

No, I'm not the bride...

Let me start off with a simple statement...I have fantastic friends. Saturday night my friend R arranged a night of dinner and dancing...complete with me not having to drive. Of course, since it's a night out for me, it must come complete with some humiliation...and a lot of laughter.
To start the night, R brought me a new tiara (yay! it's sparkly!) and leies (sp??) for all the attendees. Somehow we missed the memo that told us everyone at the pub would think I was a bride-to-be, rather than a birthday princess.
D'oh!
I spent a good portion of the night engaged in the following conversation:
Random Pub-hopper: Are you getting married?
Me: No, it's my birthday.
RP(in a very disappointed voice), : Oh, happy birthday. Where's the bride?
Me (pointing): Over there.
RP: Thanks!
Yeah, it was like that.
But I danced. Actually, for quite a while I was the only one who danced...if you don't count the nice gentleman who came out to spin me around the floor a few times. It's really too bad I don't follow the lead very well. And even worse that I'm not very good at letting someone dip me...as evidenced by the sound of my tuches hitting the floor when he tried.
Still, we danced the night away, I got my flirt on, and came home in the weeeee hours of the morning...which I learned I really can't do so much any more. Somehow the recovery time has grown...and I'm not sure I like that. But fun was had by all, and I had a long weekend to enjoy.

Pride is a funny thing...

I rarely think of my writing as this extra special thing. It's who I am. I take it for granted that it's a part of my life, one that will never go away. It's also a handy party trick. Pull that little tidbit out at a dinner party or other gathering, and you'll have plenty of conversation for at least 10 minutes. Maybe even an hour if you're lucky. It dawned on me the other day, though, that maybe it's not such an ordinary thing. I mean, I realize that I'm part of a small group simply by virtue of having finished a manuscript. An even smaller group because I've sent those manuscripts out to attempt publication. But it still didn't strike me as special until a friend of mine told me how proud she was of me. Now granted, this was after listening to me go on about other events of the weekend. Maybe she was trying to cheer me up, but I don't think so. There was genuine pride in her voice. Pride that I'd followed my dreams, regardless of how bumpy the road might be. Another friend also commented on how proud I should be of my current manuscript and all the time, effort and love I poured into it. And again I was struck at her perspective. I am proud of my work, of myself. I know I've done a lot of things that others only dream of, and yet it's not something I spend a lot of time on. I cheer for myself each time I finish a manuscript. I cheer each time I start a manuscript. I cheer when I make such a mess out of my characters that it seems they'll never dig themselves out. But I don't often stop to think about how special those actions are. And I never realized how much I needed to hear those words from them. It's not that I needed the accolades, or the awe, but rather I needed that reminder that I do what few people can do...and I do it well. I may not be published yet, but I'm close. So very, very close. I just needed a reminder of it. Maybe we all need that reminder.

Comings and goings...

How is it time seems to speed up when you have good friends visiting? One of my friends from high school spent a long weekend with me, mostly to interview at some local hospitals. Despite the lack of sleep, and work, we managed to fit in a great visits. I forget sometimes how much fun I have with my friend.
Of course, the flipside is the reminder that I'm much more used to my routines, and my way of life. I'm not used to having someone around everytime I walk in the door, or talking all the time. I'm not used to feeling like I'm entertaining for 5 days in a row.
It helps that we are such good friends we can sit silently and just be, without it becoming one of those uncomfortable things.
Despite the interruption to my routines, I love having family and friends visit. I love sharing my town with them, and all the places I love to visit. I love becoming a tourist in my own city, as we drive around to all those tourist-y locations.

It's ba-ack...

The wind, that is. Yesterday morning the state went on alert, anxiously watching the weather reports for news on our latest "Wind Storm." Weathermen (and women) assured us we would not revisit last December's storm, and for that we're all thankful. So far the fastest gusts I've heard about clocked in at 62 mph. But as far as I know they didn't close either bridge, so we've been okay. There are power outages around the sound, but nothing like last winter. Mainly we're dealing with fallen trees, and traffic issues as a result.
I'm just hoping it all dies down enough so my friend Allison's plane can land at the airport. She's visiting for a long weekend. I've been looking forward to this visit for a while, as it's been a coupel of years since she's been able to get to town. Even better, she's in town to interview for a couple of jobs...so she might move here! See, ladies and gents? My master plan is working. Bwah-hahahah!
In the meantime, I sit here putting all my good thoughts to the lights staying on in my apartment, safe plane landings, graphs for school and revisions...Who says I don't know how to have fun?
