I'm not a stalker, I swear!
Tonight must have been Teacher Night at the gym, and I never received the memo! It's always a little disconcerting (my fave word for the week), to run into someone you know at the gym, let alone in the locker room. It's even stranger to run into someone you only know by sight when in the locker room. Thankfully, she didn't think I was some crazy stalker when I greeted her with, "You work for BSD, don't you?"If it were me, I would have turned my back and pretended to be deaf. Or maybe I simply would have freaked out, thinking I'd been found by a parent. Clearly, she's either used to be recognized in strange places, or else I'm not as intimidating as I like to think. We chatted for a few minutes, mostly about the fact that it's a sign we're near the end of the trimester, as teachers are flocking toward stress-relieving outlets. We were joined by another two teachers from her school, both of who ended up on the elliptical machines next to me. Thankfully, I managed to restrain myself from talking shop during the very long 40 minutes. I know they appreciated it. And hopefully when I run into them at the district meeting tomorrow afternoon, they won't think I'm stalking them.Labels: gym, random musings, teaching
Is that the sun??
In Seattle, it's not uncommon to go months without really seeing the sun. Oh, we have daylight, but even on the non-rainy days, it's usually overcast to the point of bleakness. Our winters are rainy, cold and gray. At least, that's a typical winter. But we've now had a week of beautiful days, culminating in today. Sunny and mid-50's. I'm even venturing out without a jacket! This is my favorite kind of day, full of possibilities. So here's to the sun! I'm off to enjoy it for a bit. The writing can wait until a little later this afternoon. You know. When the sun goes down.Labels: happy times, sun, writing
At a loss...
Sadly, I'm at a loss for what to write about today. Do I tell you about the movie marathon Serena and I had on Tuesday night (The Simpson's Movie, Martian Child, and Becoming Jane)? Do I tell you about all the lovely books I bought last night, when all I went into the store for was a magazine picture for the new haircut I want (didn't find a picture, still don't know what I want)?Do I tell you all that books are the new crack? I mean seriously, did I need to buy five books, just because if I bought four the 5th was free? Did I even need one, considering the number waiting to be read (library books, people! And books borrowed from friends)? No, I didn't. But still I stock-piled my arms up with the latest and greatest (almost all of which I've actually been waiting for...but what's so new about that?). On the upside, I was finally able to track down the latest Jill Shalvis (highly ellusive), which makes me happy. I could tell you about how I changed acupuncturists. Wanna know why? Really? You do? Okay, I'll tell you. I changed acupuncturists because it creeped me out that when I responded well to the treatments, the man told me it must be because Jesus loved me.
Yup. You read that correctly. Needless to say it was one straw too many (The Christian rock music playing in the office didn't help), so I switched to a new guy. One who offers me tea when I walk in. One who only sticks me once or twice in the wrist, instead of six or seven times.
One who doesn't cause pain.
I know!! I can tell you about how well the writing is going. I'm ever so close to page 50. I can practically taste it! But don't take my word for it. Stay tuned for the updated progress meter (currently being built, so show some patience people!), to prove just how far I've come.
Or I could just tell you that I have three wonderful, joyous (tax filled) days of break left and I plan to enjoy each and every one of them.
Yeah. I think I'll tell you about that... Labels: books, life, vacation, writing
Yiddish word of the...
Okay, I give up. Clearly I have good intentions, but I can't seem to get it together to do one of these a day, let alone a week. So from here on out we'll just call it Yiddish Word of the Whenever I Darn Well Feel Like It. I think it has a nice ring, don't you?So for all you faithful readers (and those of you who find me accidently...I know you're searching for info on Madonna. You got me instead, so stay awhile), here's today's word: Shmegegi - (n.) Idiot. Pronounced shmeh-geh-gee. Frankly, I think this one has a much better tone attached to it. I mean really, when you're calling someone an idiot, don't you want to have some pizzazz when you go about it? I know I do. So there you go. I hope you enjoyed tonight's installment. Stay tuned for more words, and for a very special interview (I swear, Eileen, I'm sending the questions!) and possibly the answer to how I missed the hellmouth under East Quad.Labels: geeky fun, Yiddish words
Book Girl Dance of Joy...
There's nothing like coming home to find a package on your doorstep, at least when that package is full of books you ordered only days before (Go Fast Shipping!!). It's even more exciting when said package includes the highly anticipated Unpredictable by the fabulous Eileen Cook. I met Eileen at the Emerald City Writers Conference last October. She's hilariously funny and wonderfully sweet...qualities I admire in a writer and a friend. So why am I so excited for this book, you ask? Simple really. Take a bumpy cover, fabulous red shoes, and the tagline, "She's no psychic-but she can fake it she has to...." and you know this is a book I'm dying to get my hands on.
And now, the wait is over!
To whet your appetite, here's the back copy blurb:
Sophie Kintock isn't crazy, she just wants her guy back. And posing as a psychic to give his new girlfriend a fake reading designed to break them up isn't going overboard, is it? Don't answer that.
Faking psychic powers turns out to be easy and fun, especially after a few lessons from Nick, the cute (if a bit nerdy) skeptic, who knows all the tricks of the trade. But her readings do a lot more than she could have predicted - and she's offered a job telling fortunes on the radio.
Now she must decide if she should accept her rising stardom in a less-than-honest line of work. And whether the best option is trying to rekindle her old flame - or finding romance with someone new.
And most important, she needs to figure out whether the answers lie in the stars - or in herself....
Now, if that doesn't convince you to buy this book, I don't know what will. Maybe an interview? Hmmm...you'll have to come back and see about that one. But while you're waiting, go here and buy this book! Labels: books, happy times
Notes from the couch...
I spent the day home from work, literally sick and tired. Here are some thoughts for you that I pulled together during my hours actually awake (and folks, there really weren't many of those...)-Everyone should be able to take a 3.5 hour nap in the afternoon. It makes you feel so good! Of course, when you're ready for sleep a few hours after that? Something's not right. -Flaming balls of cotton. Seriously, flaming balls of cotton used to heat up giant herb crayons, which are then used for "heat therapy" during acupuncture. Is it bad that I couldn't actually feel much of the heat? Is it bad that my acupuncturist could, and likely almost burned off his fingers?-Books! Books! More books! Today is Super Tuesday, and not just because of all the primaries, or Mardi Gras. No, it's because so many eagerly awaited books were released. Namely: Unpredictable by the fabulous Eileen Cook (no, this does not count as my promo, that'll come another day), The Last Twilight by Marjorie M. Liu (not fair that both copies at Borders were already reserved), and Dream Chaser by Sherrilyn Kenyon (not Acheron's book, but that comes very soon!!). Thankfully, I had Allison Brennan's Killing Fear to keep me company when I was awake. And now, folks, it's back off to sleep. Gotta go back to work tomorrow.Labels: acupuncture, books, naps, random musings
