What I'm reading...
Time for an update on what I'm reading...and what I'm anxiously waiting for. in the land of Just Finished we have: -If the Shoe Fits by Stephanie Rowe (author of Date Me Baby, One More Time). Very fun story, but closer to a chick-lit than her paranormal romances. -Mrs. Perfect by Jane Porter. Loved it! Jane just grows better and better as a writer. I love her books. What I'm reading right now: -The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I love her Twilight series, and can't wait for Breaking Dawn. But in the meantime she's thoroughly sucked me in with The Host. What's up next: -Superb and Sexy by Jill Shalvis. It's just released, and I'm off to the store asap.-gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson. Shannon loaned me this one with fabulous recommendations. -Body Language by Suzanne Brockmann. It's a re-print, but it's perfect to tide me over until her next Troubleshooters book. As always there are a ton more...I just can't keep up with it all.Labels: books
No, I'm not the bride...
Let me start off with a simple statement...I have fantastic friends. Saturday night my friend R arranged a night of dinner and dancing...complete with me not having to drive. Of course, since it's a night out for me, it must come complete with some humiliation...and a lot of laughter. To start the night, R brought me a new tiara (yay! it's sparkly!) and leies (sp??) for all the attendees. Somehow we missed the memo that told us everyone at the pub would think I was a bride-to-be, rather than a birthday princess.D'oh!I spent a good portion of the night engaged in the following conversation: Random Pub-hopper: Are you getting married?Me: No, it's my birthday.RP(in a very disappointed voice), : Oh, happy birthday. Where's the bride? Me (pointing): Over there.RP: Thanks!Yeah, it was like that. But I danced. Actually, for quite a while I was the only one who danced...if you don't count the nice gentleman who came out to spin me around the floor a few times. It's really too bad I don't follow the lead very well. And even worse that I'm not very good at letting someone dip me...as evidenced by the sound of my tuches hitting the floor when he tried.Still, we danced the night away, I got my flirt on, and came home in the weeeee hours of the morning...which I learned I really can't do so much any more. Somehow the recovery time has grown...and I'm not sure I like that. But fun was had by all, and I had a long weekend to enjoy. Labels: birthdays, friends
Reminders...
We all have that friend. You know the one I'm talking about. The friend who has known you since you were all of the size of a peanut. The friend you ran in the backyard with while pulling on the dog's tale and shrieking at the top of your lungs. The friend you had your first sleepover party with, and the one who would never miss a birthday unless death or dismemberment were involved. But then life intervenes, and you drift apart. One of you moves, then the other. Before you know it, you haven't talked in a year. But you still know each other like no one else does.
I have that friend. She's one of the funniest gals I know...and you don't have to take my word for it. She's also a stand-up comic in NYC. We reconnected recently, and the other day she dropped me a note for my birthday. Actually, she didn't even mention my birthday. The note was so cryptic, it took me a few minutes to realize what she said. But once I slowed down and read it again, I started to laugh, and I'm still giggling. All she sent was a link to the St. Mary's Spring Fair, and a note to stop at Dairy Queen. But that's all she needed to send, to tell me she thinks of me...and that she remembers. See, that's where I had all my birthday parties for something like 4-5 years. It's always held Memorial Day weekend, which conveniently falls right around my birthday.
And before the fair, we'd always stop at DQ. Didn't matter how cold it was, it was time for ice cream.
So thank you M, for remembering me today...and for making me smile. Labels: birthdays, memories
Let the sun shine in...
This weekend brought sunshine and warmth...two things desperately lacking in the Pacific Northwest 10 months out of the year. Usually we have to wait until July for the truly delightful weather, but every once in a while we get a peak early on. This year took longer than normal to warm up, but once it did? Look out world! My body loved the warmth so much, most of the world thought I was loopy Saturday...and this was all without caffeine. Of course, with the sun and warmth comes a few undesireable things. Like the pasty white skin revealed by shorts and (in the case of men) lack of shirts. Seriously folks...when you're skin is so white, that we can use you for a road reflector...or possibly a panel on a satellite? Cover up. I know it's arm, and I know you want to fully experience the beautiful weather...but you're a hazard to society. One glimpse of your chalky skin, sans shirt, and we're all clutching our eyes screaming, "It burns, it burns!" Now I understand I'm not really one to talk. My legs are approximately the same shade as the envelope my phone bill arrives in. But I realize this, and I accept my limitations. I don't flaunty my skin where all the world can see it...and go blind. So for the sake of your loved ones, if you're that pale? Keep the shirt on. Or at the very least, invest in some good self-tanner.Labels: random musings, sun
Does Bubbe know something I don't know?
About 7-8 years ago I used my grandmother's house as my main address while I finished college. It was also my father's address, and I lived there when I wasn't at school. At the time I had one or two magazine subscriptions that I've long since stopped. Who has the time to read them all? So it's been a good long while since anyone has had a need to mail me anything at her address. But apparently my Bubbe knows something I don't know. Or else she's trying to tell me something. The other day I opened my mailbox here in Washington to find a magazine she decided to forward to me. It was all wrapped in plastic, clearly showing her mailing address. Except for where she attached the bright pink card where she wrote my current address and instructions to forward. The magazine? American Baby. I thought it was bad enough when she asks me (everytime I call) if I'm dating anyone. Now apparently she's decided to bypass the husband, and moved straight to me giving birth. Oy.Labels: family, random musings
Good Times, Good Friends
I love book signings. There's something about gathering together readers and writers in celebration of a new book. My insides go all warm and fuzzy. I love it even more when the author hosting the event is a friend of mine.Last week Jane Porter celebrated the release of her latest title, Mrs. Perfect. I've already begun reading, and I love it. Jane's writing is very honest, very open and very emotional. Several friends, both new and old, joined me to celebrate the launch. Here are some photos from the signing and the after party. Here I am with the ever fabulous, Keira Soleore. I love this gal. She has so much energy and a true love of books. Plus, she makes me laugh. Here are Carolynn E., Jenn Stewart, Kelli Estes, me, Christina Arbini, and Neely (a fellow Jane fan). These ladies kept me laughing from the time I sat down, to the time I finally left.Labels: book signings, writing
Tag! You're it...
The ever lovely Dona Sarkar tagged me on her blog, to participate in a fun meme. The rules are: 1. Pick up the nearest book.2. Open to page 123.3. Find the fifth sentence.4. Make up the next three sentences and post them.5. Tag five people and post a comment to the person who tagged me.Next to me right now is my just returned copy of Unpredictable by Eileen Cook. The fifth sentence on pg. 123 reads: She brushes her silver-blonde hair off her face. Her hand shook, and she prayed no one noticed. She hated speaking in public, and especially hated speaking in front of a bunch of major donors. She opened her mouth, then promptly shut it in a fairly decent imitation of a gaping fish. So there you have it. My three cents. What are yours? I'm tagging all of you! C'mon, I dare you to pick up the first book you come across and give it a try.Labels: geeky fun, memes, random musings
I feel very appreciated...
Last week was teacher appreciation week. In fact, I am so appreciated, my students brought me enough flowers to cover my entire room. Aren't they beautiful?
There are some days when I wonder why I put myself through all the stress. Then there are days like last Monday, when I remember how much of a difference I make in 22 little lives every day.
***And the winner of the Mrs. Perfect pack is...Jacquie Rogers! Jacquie, please email me privately (erin @ erineisenberg.net) with your address where I can send you your goodies. Labels: random musings, teaching
Good news and a contest...
The good news? Geek Squad came through for me. They recovered most of my files, and are shipping them home where they belong. Whew! I cannot begin to tell you the level of relief I'm feeling right now, knowing that I don't have to find a way to rewrite 4 months worth of work. As for the contest, the details are below. The winner will receive a copy of Jane Porter's latest book, Mrs. Perfect, along with Shannon McKelden's Venus Envy and Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. Trust me, you want to win this contest. And if you don't? Tell your friends, because surely they want to win. The contest will run through next Tuesday afternoon. C'mon. You know you wanna...Labels: contests, writing
Offical Release!
Today is the official launch party for Jane Porter's newest title, Mrs. Perfect. In honor of the launch, I'm offering a contest. The winner will receive a copy of Mrs. Perfect, along with a mass market copy of Venus Envy by Shannon McKelden and Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Entering is easy. All you have to do is leave me a comment telling me in what way you're NOT perfect. That's right, folks, I said, "Not." I want to know what slacker-status you've embraced. Have you accepted that the laundry will never be fully completed? Do you, like me, dream of a clutter free living room but recognize that it's not in the cards for more than a day or two? How are you NOT perfect. Winners will be drawn next Tuesday, May 13th at random from those who respond.Labels: books, contests, writing
Still pushing through...
The panic of last week has subsided into a low-grade humming in my nervous system. I've entered the land of the eternal optimist, where I'm convinced that Geek Squad will fix everything. And please, don't tell me they won't. I like my happy place, and it has made me a much calmer person. Please leave me there until it's absolutely necessary. I've decided to put the power of positive thinking to work. They will recover my files. They will!Yes, there are contingency plans in place, but I refuse to talk about them anymore, for fear they steal energy from my positive thinking. While I wait to hear the good news, I've started reading Save the Cat by Blake Snyder. It seems everywhere I turn, writers are talking about this man and his book. So, being a smart gal, I decided to pick up my own copy of it. He's also speaking at Nationals in SF this summer, so I figure I should read it before hearing him. You know, in preparation. I've also entered the land of the SciFi geekdom, and have given in to the inevitable. For the last 3+ years I've managed to avoid Battlestar Gallactica...mostly out of self-preservation. I knew it was exactly my kind of show...and so I refused to watch. Who has the time as it is? I refused...until this weekend. I've borrowed Serena's copy of the first season and am slowly making my way through it. I'm definitely hooked, and wondering how I'll be able to watch the other three sets before On Demand erases all the back episodes from this season. I'm thinking it may not be humanly possible, considering I have a day job, and a book to write. Still, it's a good, honest endeavor, right? Today also opened biking season, aka Mom and Me Ride Until We Can't Ride Anymore. We did very well, busting through about 13 miles on our first time out. The big news, though, isn't that we managed 13 miles. No, the big news is that I beat Mom! Wahoo! After 2 years of weekly summer rides, I'm finally in good enough shape to not only keep pace with Mom the whole time, but to actually pass her in several spots. I'm liking taking the lead. All of these have put me in a much happier frame of mind these last few days. I can almost believe all hell didn't break loose. Almost. Labels: happy place, random musings, writing
